Boscombe Gardens
By Phil Rogers
Boscombe Chine Gardens is a park in the Boscombe area of Bournemouth on the south coast of England. A "chine" is a steep-sided valley, and the park runs through the middle of this valley. The name "Boscombe" means "a valley in which spiky plants grow". The chine runs from Christchurch Road down to the beach. If you decide to visit, just follow the signs for "Boscombe Pier and Beaches". Before development of the area in Victorian times, what is now Boscombe was quite rough heath land, and there are still areas along the coast where the thorny (or spiky) gorse is growing. The Boscombe Chine gardens were laid out by Sir Henry Drummond Wolff between 1868 and 1871. He was a local MP who owned a lot of land in that area. Nearby Drummond Road is named after him. Sir Henry's design included walks, a croquet ground, a rustic bridge and a lodge house, which still exists next to the northern entrance to the park. At the lower end of the chine, there was a mineral spring, giving the region the name Boscombe Spa. In the 1880s, further development of the park was carried out, including the laying of paths, tennis courts and pavilion, and a pond for model boats. Some of these features still existed until the 1970s. Now the boat pond was filled in and the tennis courts were replaced by mini-golf. The rustic bridge was replaced by a concrete structure, which doesn't look as bad as it sounds! The site of the spring is marked by a small hut. The park became somewhat overgrown with tall pine trees, shrubs and bushes. The mini-golf fell into disrepair and the park started to attract drug-addicts and prostitutes at night-time. In recent years, the park has undergone another transformation. Trees have been felled, bushes cut back and lawns re-laid with grass. The mini-golf was completely rebuilt and the old tennis pavilion replaced by a small cafe and toilets. An enclosed court is available for playing ball games such as basketball, and a children's play area featuring a water-park have been constructed. The drug-addicts and prostitutes have moved on, and it is a pleasure to walk through the park down to the beach and pier. |

This is a nice piece of intel about Boscombe Gardens. I have added a link to it from my lens on Bournemouth at Squidoo, and will also reference it on my intel about Bournemouth.

You are welcome. I am in the process of adding new lenses about Bournemouth Hotels and Accomodation and also Famous People From Bournemouth, so hopefully I can get more traffic to your Intel from these as well.
